Poor Baby

Peanut had her eye removed due to glaucoma. When daughter called upset wondering if she should put Peanut to sleep at the Vet's recommendation or have the 2nd eye removed, I told her it was more humane to put her dog to sleep. Would have thought I told her to kill the dog by her reaction! In the wild, our pets will die of natural causes, but we keep them alive (like people) through the wonders of modern science or medicines. Thought it would be cruel to remove poor Peannie's 2nd eye. Lori went ahead and had the operation done. When she brought Peanut out to California to visit her sister and I, Peanut chased the girls around the grass as if she were a young pup! Imagine a no-eyed dog chasing people! Thought, then, Lori had made the right choice. Peanut lived several years after, her body riddled with cancer. Would it have been better to let nature take it's course years earlier? Don't know. What do you think about prolonging animals lives?  posted October 08, 2006

Johnny Jazz said... I don't have a problem with prolonging a pet's life as long as it's not suffering and is happy. Most responsible pet owners know when to draw the line.

Nice blog by the way.

I think that if the animals are still happy and not in unbearable, obvious pain, then why not? we do it to ourselves...

Peanut One Eye

Already going blind from Glaucoma in the other eye.

Peanut

Our Peanuts Dog Star  Ah, Peanut! "who would be that stupid" co-worker commented on Radio DJ's telling of a news article, "to lock a dog in a car with the motor running?".

"Um," I replied, "well, it was Lori...". But she didn't do it! She and her Dad drove to pick her boyfriend up at work. She jumped out of the car, leaving the motor running, to dash inside to fetch her guy. Dad gets out of the front seat, to get in the backseat, Peanut excited about being left alone, jumped at the window, depressing the automatic door locks. After futile attempts to pick the lock, police were called. They were trying to get Peanut to unlock the locks by jumping on the button again.

"Knew I should have stopped to get gas!" Lori was worried about the idling engine and on E gas tank.

The police got the car unlocked and the story made the newspaper. Seems the Officers had never seen a No-eyed dog.

The Dog Star photo isn't very clear, but that's Peanut, the No-Eyed dog, romping in the grass in Long Beach California. Lori came from Pennsylvania to visit her sister and I, bringing Peanut on the plane. Happy memory watching Peanut chase the girls that day as if she were a young pup. Guess, Lori made the right choice to have the second eye removed.

Peanut Tales

Lori was attending a Dog Grooming school in NYC, so Mom got to dog sit. At the time I had a glass top dinning table. Came home to find Peanut's paw prints upon it. OCD, I always keep the chairs neatly pushed under the table. So how did this no-eyed dog manage to get on top of the table. Peanut wasn't a high jumper; just one more of life's unexplained mysteries.

Peanut did not like being left home alone. Lori usually took her everywhere. So she was a tad bit upset at being deserted by her Mom and left, by Granny, in a strange place. Another day when I got home from work, the neighbor 'cross the hall, quickly opened her door...there must be a rat in my apartment she said excitedly. Yaw, a big rat named Peanut, who clawed incessantly at the door, making the strange noises, the neighbor had heard. What a hole she made! Luckily I knew how to fill the hollow door, sand, and paint it. It was a no-pet lease.

Lori & I went to a state park one day. Upon seeing Peanut, a young man exlaimed "aaahhh, a Pit Bull" and took off running, Peanut took off after him, Lori in quick pursuit, his friends laughed watching him running with a no-eyed minature dauchshund on his heels. Peanut caught and safely in her arms the boy calmed down, as Lori explained for the zillionth time about Peanut's eye removal. He tepidly petted Peanut, who adored the attention from the group of boys.

Sheila & Bubba Tug-o-War

Bubba, RIP 07/15/2007

Two weeks ago, Lori's brother-in-law told her he had a talk with Bubba. Bubba, he said, told him he was not going to be around much longer and Lori needed a new puppy. Of course bro-in-law had a new puppy in mind. Here they go again; part pitbull mix, are they trying to give granny gray hairs or what?

Bubba enjoyed his last night on earth with a visit to play in the backyard with Bernie and Logan. Back home he laid in front of the front door and went to sleep. Completely to sleep.

Lori got upset: "If I did not get the puppy, Bubba would still be alive" she said. I like to think Bubba was very happy she got a new puppy, so he could safely leave his ailing earthly body, knowing Lori had a new little puppy to love.

(I do not remember when Sheila moved to the Great Beyond.)

"the worse thing that can happen...

...is we'll get bit and find out it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be" I said trying to convince my sister Susan to continue our walk up the hill in the dark. Barking dog up ahead!

"Or we'll find out it's worse than we thought" Sue replied, and insisted we walk in the opposite direction.

Mother was afraid of dogs; she passed the fear down to most of her children. I was determined not to pass it down to my children, so they grew up with a fearless love of dogs. It helped that their father was a dog lover too! It isn't suprising that Lori grew up to become a Dog Groomer, and that she would adopt a greyhound whose racing days were over.

RIP, 02/09/2006

Poor Sue & Drewsy. Sue didn't even like dogs, but with love comes pets. She learned to get along with the dogs, and even enjoyed Mollie, Drew's Jack Russell Terrier. Anytime an animal or another dog would appear on the television screen, there was Mollie jumping up & down yipping, trying to get at it. Sue had to take Mollie to the Vet to be put to sleep. Drew was unable to go with her for moral support. He's in the hospital recovering from an 11 hour surgery. As far back as two years ago, Drew was becoming sad that poor "Moll" was aging and won't be with them much longer. Now she's gone without his last good-bye. I had some fun time's with Molly playing fetch. I'd do a good wind-up throwing with all my might so it would go far in that huge back yard. Actually didn't give her much of a work out, tho', hit the porch roof and landed a foot over the fence. So it was me going to fetch. She'll be missed.

Drew never recovered from his surgery. He passed away 03/24/2006. She still has Buddy, their Golden Retriver, who they got as a pup when their grandson lived with them. Funny, she'd been visiting me in Mt Pocono, to sort out her feelings for Drew, that day we walked up the street and she was afraid of the barking dog. They did marry and had 25 years together.
